The Youth Makerspace Larnaka of the Cyprus Youth Organization presents the new series of educational workshops, “Back to the Future”\u2014a unique initiative designed to introduce young people to traditional arts and crafts!<\/p>\n

Through hands-on workshops led by experienced instructors, participants will discover how skills and techniques can be applied creatively across various themes, including engraving, ceramics, woodturning, weaving, silversmithing, and basketry. The “Back to the Future” experience aims to provide young individuals with the opportunity to experiment with tools, using their own hands and equipment available at the space, in order to apply traditional craft knowledge. The goal of these workshops is not only personal development and the acquisition of new skills for makers but also the preservation of our cultural heritage.<\/p>\n

Once again, Youth Makerspace serves as a meeting point for amateurs and professionals, fostering knowledge exchange across generations as young and experienced artisans share their expertise. Through this process of interaction and experiential learning, artisans will not only transfer their techniques but also share the aesthetics, inspiration, and significance of each craft in a modern context.<\/p>\n

Workshop Schedule:<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Ceramics<\/strong>
\n\ud83d\udcc5 8\/3 \u23f0 15:00-18:00
\nIn this workshop, young makers will have the opportunity to engage with ceramics, one of the oldest art forms, and shape their own clay creations. With the valuable guidance of instructors, participants will work with clay, using either their hands or a wheel, to mold their own vessels and bring them to life!<\/p>\n

Basketry<\/strong>
\n\ud83d\udcc5 15\/3 \u23f0 10:00-13:00
\nThis workshop introduces participants to the traditional art of basketry, which includes both basket weaving and mat weaving. With the help of the instructor, makers will create their own woven crafts from reeds and gain insight into the art and utility of this natural material!<\/p>\n

Silversmithing<\/strong>

\nIn this workshop, participants will enter the fascinating world of jewelry making! Through a brief presentation, they will learn about different jewelry-making techniques and the fundamental principles of designing and crafting their own jewelry using the wax carving technique.<\/p>\n

Woodturning<\/strong>

\nIn the woodturning workshop, makers will have the chance to learn the craft of shaping wood with the guidance of experienced artisans. Woodturning is a specialized skill worth exploring. Participants will use the lathe equipment and special tools to carve raw wood into unique creations!<\/p>\n

Weaving<\/strong>

\nWeaving is one of the oldest crafts in Cyprus, with various techniques originating from Cypriot villages and spreading worldwide. In this weaving workshop, makers will have the opportunity to weave on their own DIY wooden loom, crafted using the laser cutter at Youth Makerspace Larnaka. They will also discover one of the most significant textile crafts of Cypriot rural weaving, the “Fythkiotiko” pattern!<\/p>\n

Engraving<\/strong>
\n\ud83d\udcc5 12\/4 \u23f0 10:00-13:00
\nIn the engraving workshop, young makers will meet renowned Cypriot engravers and learn about the stories behind their works, which are inspired by their personal experiences. Using various techniques, participants will design and engrave their own patterns onto surfaces, exploring the profound art of engraving!<\/p>\n
