Firefighting robotic system

The project involves creating a flexible robotic firefighting system using Arduino Uno microcontroller technology to effectively deal with fires in various environments, both indoors and outdoors. Using its precise control mechanisms, the robotic system can precisely direct the flow of water towards the source of a fire, up to 4 meters away, with a wide range of motion covering angles from 0 to 180 degrees in azimuth and tilt.

Filament extruder from recycled plastic bottles

With a focus on innovation, sustainability, and problem-solving, we’re here to redefine the possibilities of 3D printing technology while supplying 3D printers and filaments. Our efforts extend to finding environmentally friendly additive manufacturing solutions, such as our ongoing project to create a filament extruder from recycled plastic bottles. By harnessing the power of recycling and reuse, we’re not just reducing waste – we’re also demonstrating the potential for sustainable manufacturing practices.

While in the past the use of existing materials suggested a lack of innovation and craftsmanship, it is now considered that the rearrangement of used objects manifests new identities when the artist physically alters them. Thus, this work advocates the practice of reassembly by seeking to “pull art from its sacred pedestal and reduce it to a level of absurdity…”.

What is a biolab and what can one create there? A biolab is a biotechnological art laboratory, a place for the incurably curious where magical things happen. It is a laboratory where you can grow, craft, cultivate and design almost anything; a place where anyone can explore the intersections of biology, art, design and technology.

In order to help you visualise and imagine the possibilities of the biolab, we have brought the biolab to you! We are showcasing some of the tools, equipment and projects you can explore in a biolab, here, in the makersfair.

BioCuriosities lab is the first DIY biodesign and bioart laboratory in Cyprus and this year in the Makersfair it is representing the Biodesign festival that is part of the candidacy for European Cultural Capital through Larnaka2030. Since 2022, Biocuriotisites lab has been a nomadic biolab; moving around Cyprus and other parts of the world disseminating and producing alternative forms of interdisciplinary knowledge.

We aspire to create a physical biolab that is a community led space for the incurably curious that provides open access to tools, resources, equipment and knowledge into the fascinating world of the creative intersections of biotechnology.

The land of decomposition ΙΙ

In this work, the artist explores alternative ways of understanding the concept of value by turning trash into colorful and beautiful scarves, symbolically, to question how people evaluate life. Through waste photography, various images have been selected as objects and then reassembled through the process of collage, producing calaesthetic manifestations of waste piles. As an extension, the scarves are made from 100% recycled plastic.

Temperature Logging System with Arduino

This innovative device uses Arduino technology to provide accurate and real-time temperature measurements. Designed to record and display temperature fluctuations, it updates every 20 seconds, showing the highest and lowest temperatures observed during that interval. This is particularly useful in critical environments such as laboratories, industrial sites, or food storage facilities, where precise temperature logging is crucial. The digital display is clear and user-friendly, ensuring that extreme temperatures are easily and quickly recognizable.

Bionic cat paws

In collaboration with a veterinary center and doctors, I undertook to design and manufacture two bionic legs for a cat that needed them. I designed and printed multiple 3D prototype legs and tested different versions. As soon as we decided on the final model, I went to the technical design where I ensured the geometric accuracy and the correct fit to the implant. Through repeated tests and improvements, I arrived at the final model, which I printed on my 3D Printer. Thanks to rapid prototyping and 3D Printing technology, the cat’s mobility was fully restored.

Smart faucet prototype

The main objective of this project is to develop and install a prototype smart faucet that uses modern technologies for automatic temperature management, to maximize water use and temperature control in various applications. Thus, a self-contained system is presented that addresses important issues related to water management, energy efficiency, and hygiene, redefining traditional temperature control faucets.

Zephyr, The Mini Supercomputer

Zephyr is a mini-supercomputer designed to demonstrate and teach the principles of high-performance computing (HPC). It consists of 18 interconnected Raspberry Pi boards, which simulate a node in a wider supercomputer network. These nodes are housed within a transparent Plexiglas case, making the complex interactions of the hardware components visible and accessible for educational purposes.
