Stellar Entanglement – Larnaca Biennale

“Stellar Entanglement” (2019) is a VR film based on the stripped-down show “The Evolution of Stars”. It tells the story of a mysterious scientific institute trying to ensure the immortality of a civilization held prisoner on a doomed planet in a remote region of our Galaxy. However, the main focus is the search for the space of the Universe within people. The project resulted from the collaboration of Instytut B61 with the directing duo, The Kissinger Twins (Katarzyna Kifert & Dawid Marcinkowski).

The work deals not only with issues of stellar evolution and quantum connectionism but also touches on philosophical issues. “The connections between particles in the Universe, says Jan Świerkowski, are no different from the connections between us.

But is it possible that some of us have been infected with the same elements that made up past cultures?

After all, as astronomers say, each of us brings a souvenir of cosmic catastrophes – supernova explosions. If so, does the fact that we are made of the same matter as the luminous cores of the stars allow us to be called ‘children of the stars’ or is something more necessary?”

Instytut B61 is an international art and science collective founded in Toruń during the UNESCO International Year of Astronomy in 2009 by artist, astronomer, and art curator Jan Świerkowski. Group members include scientists, artists, musicians, visual artists, actors, and cultural administrators. The group creates non-profit performances and multimedia theaters that combine art, science, and technology. The group’s works have been presented in Poland and abroad, including in Armenia, Belgium, Estonia, the Netherlands, Latvia, Lithuania, India, Germany, Portugal, Singapore and the United Arab Emirates.

Registration is mandatory. Choose your preferred time slot between 10:00 – 18:00. The duration of the VR film is 10 minutes.

Cosmic Perspective – Larnaca Biennale

Don’t miss this talk! It will be very interesting, especially if you are interested in how art can be combined with scientific concepts. Jan Swierkowski, founder of Instytut B61, will explore the very deep impact of these interactions. It will illuminate how these contacts can be transformative, offering experiences that can reshape our perception of life and philosophy.

During his presentation, Swierkowski will explain his experimental approach, which combines art and science using cognitive metaphor theory and conceptual combinations. Additionally, it will guide us through the process of establishing successful art residencies. These residences act as collaborative spaces where artists and scientists come together to explore and translate the details of the Invisible World.

JAN ŚWIERKOWSKI is a curator, artist, futurist and astronomer. He graduated in astrophysics and completed a PhD in cultural studies. He has received grants from the Government of Portugal (FCT) and the Polish Ministry of Culture and National Heritage. He holds the title of Honorary Ambassador at the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń and is the winner of the 2017 Prize of the Minister of Science and Higher Education for the Dissemination of Science in Poland.

Combine this talk with your visit on Monday the 13th to the Cinematic 360 VR experience “Stellar Entanglement” by Instytut B61, hosted at the Youth Makerspace Larnaka.

OPEN CALL FOR GIRLS IN STEAM 2023

Girls in STEAM Academy’s BridgeSTEAM program is coming back in December!

With a mission to eliminate discrimination and strengthen the presence of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) fields, Girls in STEAM Academy is announcing its third BridgeSTEAM program of the year! The two-day program is aimed at girls aged 14-16 and will take place on 9 & 10 December 2023 at the Youth Makerspace Larnaka.

BridgeSTEAM is not just a program. It is an opportunity for girls to develop new programming skills, learn about the career prospects offered in the STEAM fields, and get in touch with outstanding female role models in Cyprus who are making their way in these fields.

The program also includes a Career Counseling workshop to help girls understand which career options suit them in the world of STEAM and an educational workshop on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

With more than 150 graduates and 3 years of action, the Girls in STEAM Academy team aims for a world without stereotypes, where each of us has the opportunity to follow what we dream without limitations. In 2022, 4 two-day BridgeSTEAM programs were successfully held in three cities of Cyprus, giving girls aged 14-16 and 17-18 the opportunity to experience a unique educational experience – you can see the relevant video here.

“The program has fully met my expectations and I would do it again and again! Thank you very much!!” (2022 program participant)

But the experience for the participants does not stop there. The girls who participate in the Girls in STEAM Academy programs belong to the alumni network that provides them with countless opportunities, either in Cyprus or abroad. Graduates of the 2021 and 2022 programs participated in the “TechGirls” program in the United States, took on the role of presenters on the Academy’s “SheSpeaks” podcast, and had the opportunity to explore various careers through job shadowing at various companies and universities both in Cyprus and abroad.

Application for the December program is open and you can apply at the link here with more information via the program website here until November 24, 2023. Due to high demand, applications after the deadline will not be accepted.

The Girls in STEAM Academy is an initiative of the Be an Ally Foundation, with the main sponsors of this year’s programs being the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, PwC Cyprus, and the Bank of Cyprus. The initiative is led by Panagiota Polykarpou and Anastasia Liopetritis.

Why STEAM domains?

It is time to overcome stereotypes and give girls the opportunity to show their true potential. Although girls are making rapid progress in the digital world, women make up just 17% of ICT workers in the EU and just 36% of STEM graduates.

Bench – Exhibit for the Kalamourgiki Memorial Museum in Livadia

Within the framework of the cooperation of the Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company, the Municipality of Livadia, the Youth Makerspace Larnaka of the Cyprus Youth Organization and the Larnaca Archives of Phoebus Stavridis and with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Tourism, an innovative construction was created for the Kalamurgiki Memorial Museum in Livadia.

The Youth Makerspace Larnaka team, and specifically the product designer Konstantinos Harilaou, was asked to design and build a bench to be placed outside the aforementioned Museum to give it character and attract visitors and young people to the space.

The creators decided to combine the traditional art of reed-making – that is, reeds and mats – with a more modern and modern material, resin. For the three-dimensional design of the structure, the starting point was the section of the traditional ton chairs, which was “transformed” into a bench. The main inspiration for the construction was the American sculptor, of French origin, Armand Fernandez who became known for his use of everyday objects that express the reality of his time. The ultimate goal of the creation was to “freeze” the reed and its deterioration in time, creating the illusion for the visitor that the reed-making materials are floating.

An important addition is the lighting of the construction through the integrated Arduino Uno programming board which automatically changes the color of the bench every certain time. The colors chosen are yellow, which refers to the color of the traditional accent chair, pink, and green since right behind the bench there is the bougainvillea creeper. During the year, the construction will change color automatically through the Arduino Uno board, depending on the season when the bougainvillea blooms.

It is worth noting that the initiative of ETAP Larnaca, the Municipality of Livadia, the Youth Makerspace Larnaka of the Cyprus Youth Organization, and the Larnaca Archives of Phoebus Stavridis is pioneering in Cypriot terms. The successful design and combination of materials was achieved after carrying out various tests and experiments of the resin and electronic additives with the traditional materials.

The public can see the new construction in the outdoor area of the Kalamurgi Memorial Museum in Livadia, where they can get to know in depth the history of this traditional art of our island, which is included in the UNESCO National List of Intangible Cultural Heritage.
