“None of your beeswax”
MAKERSHOUSE Resident 2022 Elina Hatzinikola, in her final exhibition, highlighted various innovative methods of creating works of art in collaboration with nature’s amazing architects, bees. In this process, the artist applied her knowledge as an amateur beekeeper and utilized bees as artistic collaborators. In particular, she experimented with and created specially designed wooden constructions and shapes on the laser cutter machine available at the venue. Placing the constructions inside the hives, the bees built on the wax honeycomb and in turn created the wax sculpture. Through this simple but at the same time complex and creative process, the artist created an artistic installation through which she highlighted the result of the collaboration of bees and humans, drawing attention to their very important existence for our environment.
“Art should be a useful tool that promotes discussions and raises questions. When the audience comes into contact with the wax, the wood that went through the laser, but also the fragile creation of the bee, they can realize that technology and nature can coexist through art”.
