OPEN CALL FOR GIRLS IN STEAM 2023
Girls in STEAM Academy’s BridgeSTEAM program is coming back in December!
With a mission to eliminate discrimination and strengthen the presence of women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM) fields, Girls in STEAM Academy is announcing its third BridgeSTEAM program of the year! The two-day program is aimed at girls aged 14-16 and will take place on 9 & 10 December 2023 at the Youth Makerspace Larnaka.
BridgeSTEAM is not just a program. It is an opportunity for girls to develop new programming skills, learn about the career prospects offered in the STEAM fields, and get in touch with outstanding female role models in Cyprus who are making their way in these fields.
The program also includes a Career Counseling workshop to help girls understand which career options suit them in the world of STEAM and an educational workshop on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).
With more than 150 graduates and 3 years of action, the Girls in STEAM Academy team aims for a world without stereotypes, where each of us has the opportunity to follow what we dream without limitations. In 2022, 4 two-day BridgeSTEAM programs were successfully held in three cities of Cyprus, giving girls aged 14-16 and 17-18 the opportunity to experience a unique educational experience – you can see the relevant video here.
“The program has fully met my expectations and I would do it again and again! Thank you very much!!” (2022 program participant)
But the experience for the participants does not stop there. The girls who participate in the Girls in STEAM Academy programs belong to the alumni network that provides them with countless opportunities, either in Cyprus or abroad. Graduates of the 2021 and 2022 programs participated in the “TechGirls” program in the United States, took on the role of presenters on the Academy’s “SheSpeaks” podcast, and had the opportunity to explore various careers through job shadowing at various companies and universities both in Cyprus and abroad.
Application for the December program is open and you can apply at the link here with more information via the program website here until November 24, 2023. Due to high demand, applications after the deadline will not be accepted.
The Girls in STEAM Academy is an initiative of the Be an Ally Foundation, with the main sponsors of this year’s programs being the Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy, PwC Cyprus, and the Bank of Cyprus. The initiative is led by Panagiota Polykarpou and Anastasia Liopetritis.
Why STEAM domains?
It is time to overcome stereotypes and give girls the opportunity to show their true potential. Although girls are making rapid progress in the digital world, women make up just 17% of ICT workers in the EU and just 36% of STEM graduates.
