Girls in STEAM Academy

31/01/2022

A special project carried out by the Youth Makerspace Larnaka in 2021 in collaboration with the Be An Ally Foundation is the Girls in STEAM Academy. As part of BridgeSTEAM, the Girls in STEAM Academy was held in Limassol (December 4 & 5) at the Cyprus University of Technology and in Larnaca (December 11 & 12) at the Youth Makerspace Larnaka, for young girls aged 14-16.

The program aimed to bridge the participants’ relationships with STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics) professions, bringing them into contact with female role models from the field in question and informing them of the career guidance opportunities that exist in STEAM disciplines. At the same time, the program managed to empower the participants through programming, robotics, and technological equipment educational workshops, while also offering an educational workshop on the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Special thanks to each participant who enriched the program with their participation, the girls of the Be An Ally Foundation for the initiative they so successfully carried out, the sponsors, and everyone who participated in the realization of the Girls in STEAM Academy!

Construction of equipment for the Oncology Center of the Bank of Cyprus

19/01/2022

Youth Makerspace Larnaka was very happy to contribute to the important work of the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center. Specifically, using the technological equipment available at the venue, a prototype custom-made dipper was designed and printed. Nuclear medicine dose calibrators are used to evaluate the radioactivity administered to patients. These devices consist of a cylindrical gas ion chamber between two conductive electrodes. Radioactive materials are placed in syringes or vials and must be dipped into the cylindrical container to be properly evaluated. In the BOCOC, the calibrator is built into a specially designed isolator with a narrower cylindrical opening for the dipper. For this reason, a custom-made dipper had to be designed and 3D printed to fit the center’s needs.

We thank the Bank of Cyprus Oncology Center for allowing us to help in our way!

In a modest ceremony held on Monday, December 13 at the Youth Makerspace Larnaka, three brand new 3D printers were received by the president of the Cyprus Youth Organization, Mr. Kleanthi Koutsoftas. As part of the companies’ corporate social responsibility, the equipment was delivered to the Youth Makerspace Larnaka by Mr. Nikolas Kyriakides, on behalf of the Harris Kyriakides law firm and Mr. Harout Arakelian, owner of the Fission 3D company. Recognizing Youth Makerspace Larnaka’s contribution to children and youth, Harris Kyriakides law firm chose to support us with 3D printers to print plastic products, while Fission 3D with their kind donation, offered us resin product printing.

Youth Makerspace Larnaka, among the various actions it carries out and the wide range of equipment it has, offers opportunities to strengthen existing and develop new skills for young people. The space, as well as the Mobile Makerspace, has always offered 3D printers which are extremely useful for making prototypes and a key part of demonstrating the capabilities of our space. The addition of the three new printers aims to contribute to enriching the equipment and upgrading the space.

We would like to thank Harris Kyriakides Law Firm as well as Fission 3D for their donations, which give us the impetus to experiment and evolve.

WORKSHOPS FOR MAKERS 2022

Workshops for Makers at Youth Makerspace Larnaka

Youth Makerspace Larnaka returns with a physical presence and offers Workshops for Makers, promoting the learning of the technological equipment of the space. Our goal, for the 3rd consecutive year, is to educate and inform the public about how new forms of technology can contribute to the creation of original ideas. Through training workshops to learn technology programs and equipment, the opportunity is given for trainers to network with the public, thus expanding the Youth Makerspace Larnaka community. After the huge interest of the participants, this year we will focus on 3D design for 3D printing and laser cutting with corresponding programs, as well as with programming through the Arduino board.

Digital restoration of Tenta Kalavasos

Another archaeological site in the province of Larnaca was virtually restored at the initiative of the Larnaca Tourism Development and Promotion Company and the Youth Makerspace Larnaka of the Cyprus Youth Organization. After the Ancient Port of Kiti came the Neolithic Settlement of Kalavasos-Tenda which, together with Choirokoitia, is an excellent example of an early permanent settlement of populations on the island during the Akeramean Neolithic period (7000-5200 BC).

The settlement is brought back to life through video and 3D VR visualization, taking us back 9,500 years, to the point where some of the first permanent residents of Cyprus established a village on the western plain of the Vasilikos River. The ancient ruins are being restored, and the whole of the buildings stand out, with the main characteristic being the circular plan and the enclosure wall that surrounded the settlement. An example of the interior of a house is also presented, while special mention is made of the rare decoration of a building, where two human figures with raised arms can be seen. The video also refers to the daily activities of the inhabitants and their coexistence with the animals of the time, while archaeological finds found in the area are presented, such as tools, stone vessels, and jewelry.

The settlement of Tenta, like other settlements of the same period, was suddenly abandoned around 5,600 BC, without having yet ascertained the reasons for this sudden abandonment.

For the implementation of the project, studies of the excavation team of the site in question under the guidance of archaeologist Alison South were used, to whom warm thanks are expressed. ETAP and ONEK also thank the Department of Antiquities and the Deputy Ministry of Tourism for their contribution.

The public can experience the experience of 3D visualization at the Youth Makerspace Larnaka through the virtual reality equipment available in the space. Additionally, the video is available on YouTube

C.AR.E Festival is active in Youth Makerspace Larnaka

The “C.AR.E Festival” is also at the Youth Makerspace Larnaka!

Larnaca 2030 with much fun and enthusiasm introduces the Cyprus Arts and Education (C.AR.E) Festival, a three-day celebration of art, expression, and co-creation dedicated to children, young people, and of course the whole family. This is an original and exciting adventure of art and creativity, combined with education, accompanied by selected artists focusing on children and young people. The event will take place on the Friday weekend of October 6, 7, and 8, 2023 from 10 am to late afternoon in various parts of Larnaka, such as the Youth Makerspace Larnaka, the Municipal Theater “Georgios Lykourgos”, the Municipal Library, the Museum Pieridis, the Patticheio Municipal Theater Skala and Zouchouri Square. In the area of the Municipal Garden, there will be an outdoor food court with interesting options for young and old.

In the following link you can see the full program of the festival with all the information related to the actions, times, and places:

The goal of Larnaca 2030 is to make the C.AR.E festival an annual institution, giving new impetus to the city’s cultural and educational events. The intention is to enable teachers to have, at the beginning of the school year, a broad understanding of the available options for possible activities with their students, both within and beyond the school unit. Beyond the obvious benefits, as a philosophy, but also with its acronym (C.AR.E) as a springboard, the festival highlights and promotes the concept of care and concern for fellow human beings as a personal request for each of us, but also as an expression of social responsibility, laying the foundations for a more united and more humane society.

The C.AR.E festival is the fruit of Larnaca 2030’s public consultation with artists and educators in the “Art for Children and Youth” working group. Its organization was made possible through the cooperation of Larnaca 2030, the Pieridis Foundation, the Foundation for Cultural Creation for Children and Youth of Larnaca District, the Youth Makerspace Larnaka of the Cyprus Youth Organization, and the educational organizations OELMEK and POED Larnaca, the Federation of Parents’ Associations of Primary Education and the Federation of Parents’ Associations of Secondary and Technical Education of Larnaca.

Tickets*: SoldOut Tickets  https://tinyurl.com/42h7ndf2

*There are three single ticket prices: for one action 8 euros, for three actions 17 euros and for five actions 25 euros. Also, 6 of the festival’s scheduled actions have free entry.
