Larnaka Storytelling Statues

An innovative application called “Larnaka Storytelling Statues” was launched today. Through this app locals and visitors can listen to the story of significant personalities and symbols of the past. This interactive app is a joint initiative of Larnaka Tourism Board and Youth Board Cyprus, and is supported by the Deputy Ministry of Tourism and Larnaka Municipality.

At the first phase of the project, a passer-by can find Quick Response Codes on five statues around the city. Once the QR Code is scanned on a mobile phone with internet access, the visitor will receive an incoming phone call from the statue who will tell their exciting story and will describe their connection to Larnaka.

Through this unique experience, the visitor may listen to Zeno of Kition sharing his philosophy, Michail Kashallos describing how he started painting at the age of 70, Apollonios of Kition whose story is not that well known, though he was one of the most renowned physicians of ancient times. Among the Storytelling Statues is Kimon, the great Athenian General whose legendary story is directly connected to Larnaka. The Lion of Venice statue is also there to tell us about the strong historic links between Larnaka and Venice.

At the presentation of the first phase it was announced that this project will be implemented on additional sites of the city and the region. Hence, the second phase of the project will feature sculptures and statues at main attractions of the city, such as Saint Lazarus Church, Pierides Museum, Kyriazis Medical Museum and the Medieval Fort of Larnaka, the Armenians Memorial Sculpture, Makarios statue, the statue of Peace at the Municipal Garden and of sister Sophie Chambon. Later on, a sculpture at Larnaka Airport will be added, in cooperation with Hermes company.

Take a walk around the city and listen to the statues telling their story or stay where you are and go to this link to listen to them.

Access is only allowed via smart phones and tablets.

MAKERsHOUSE 2019 – Resident: Nayia Demetriou 2/8/2019-28/5/2020

An audio-visual experience which focuses on major human experiences: birth, life, death, different aspects of self and internal battles and changes that transform our self. A creation of a new, anthropomorphic self. A form that may be recognisable or not, a form of metamorphosis of mind and soul. The internal battles are expressed in a body-transformation game.

Concept/creation: Nayia Demetriou
Sound design: Giorgos Marinou
Technical support: Adamos Demetriou | Synergia Media
Mentor: Antonis Stylianou

Is every crisis we go through transferred on our body? The body turns into a “battle field” of confusion, insecurity and mental distress. Where does the physical aspect of the body stop and where does our self gain importance? Life is a process of constant transformation. We may detect all the changes on our personality, on our mood, but mostly on our face and body. One can find beauty in our self and its ability to turn into something new through its objectification. A deep desire to “recreate” the self. Unlike what is commonly believed, our body is not what we have. Whether we like it or not, it is what we are. An open negotiation between matter and soul, the “raw material” in which our body can be deconstructed: flesh, form and colour. A complex, versatile object which serves as a vessel of soul, and allows each self the chance for personal interpretation.

The presentation is part of MAKERsHOUSE 19 Residency Programme by Youth Makerspace Larnaka.

MAKERsHOUSE 2019 – Resident: Xarkis Group 4/3/2019

The new initiative of Xarkis, titled “Prozymin”, refers to the sourdough cultivation which is the basis of fresh dough for bread making. Over the years, bread has gained special significance in the consciousness of people, being the number one staple food of the population of Cyprus and other countries of this region.

In Cypriots’ daily life, the word “prozymin” had acquired a metaphorical meaning: it was used when people wanted to declare the real essence, the base, the core, the “yeast”, in order for something new to begin.

Hence, our new initiative aims at creating a “new yeast” through exploring the meaning of prozymin in the context of contemporary design proposals.

The exhibition will feature experiments, processes and outcomes from the first phase of the project. Join us to see how we used traditional handcrafts in alternative contexts and how we used upcycled materials to design and create furniture.

Participants: Valentin Musteata, Christina Skarpari, Chris Karpis.
